Are You Bored, Minimoni? | Book Review

Because Even Busy Kids Need Space to Feel Their Feelings

Are You Bored, Minimoni?” caught my attention immediately because these days, parents often wonder how such young children can already feel bored. Kids today are flooded with schedules — nurseries, sports classes, art lessons, language sessions — the list never ends. Minimoni is no different. Her week is packed with painting, hiking, hockey, and visiting friends and relatives from Monday to Saturday. And Sundays? Does going to church bore her, or is something else going on? That’s exactly what I wanted to discover in this book.

On the cover, Minimoni looks tired and a little sad, even though she’s surrounded by her paintings, toys, and books. I can already imagine my child asking, “Is she sick?” I love that the book shows what boredom actually looks like in a child — the sleepy eyes, the yawning mouth, the floppy body, the frustrated little frown. She’s thinking hard, head resting in her hands, and you can almost feel her wondering whether boredom will take over completely.

As an adult, I get bored too — during a bad movie, a dull conversation, or a long lecture — drifting away even though I’m still sitting there. We don’t always admit that to our kids, but it makes Minimoni’s imaginative approach to boredom even more refreshing. My favourite moment is when she travels to meet an alien. Even though she’s tired and bored, she pushes herself into a faraway world to sort things out. I admire her determination and creativity when facing difficulties.

And the ending? I absolutely love it. As a mom, the final page answers all my questions and leaves me smiling. This book is a wonderful way to help young children understand what boredom feels like — and to realise they often have more possibilities around them than they first notice. It’s a joyful, thoughtful read to share with kids.
