“Dear Math, We’re Not Friends” is delightful. As a mom who has a kid often saying, ‘I’m not a Math guy,’ I really want to convince her that she is good at Math, but how? This book tells us how capable our kids already are with Math because Math is everywhere in our daily lives and our kids are practising Math every day. It is a book both kids and parents can enjoy together.
Nikhil in the story thinks Math is scary and stays away from Math by going swimming, painting, gardening and reading. But, the cover of the book discloses that Nikhil is measuring the length of his pet and he applies Math in his life. Ha, my kid sometimes avoids her Math homework by crocheting, making wishlists, planning what to spend for her pocket money. She might not have discovered yet that Math is right in each of her favourite hobbies and interests. This book can help her see that.
Nikhil also shares how he is progressing with Math amazingly well by writing letters to Math. Parents would love to find out how our kids can do in a similar way. When my kid was little, I was having lunch and was about to let her have some not-so-yummy eel. I cut it into three equal parts and said, ‘Let’s try one-third of the eel.’ It did not work very well. I then asked her, ‘Next time, would you like one-third or one-fifth of the eel?’ She immediately replied, ‘One zero zero zero … zeroth of the eel.” I praised her for the good understanding of fractions and then she had her eel joyfully. I talk about this story when she feels frustrated in doing her Math homework. Moms need more of these stories to motivate our kids.
